Kakamega forest is the only surviving rainforest in Kenya. It is an invaluable resource for the people living around it. This program is an interview with Mr. Thomas Mmasi, a farmer in Kasali village, Shinyalu district at the outskirts of Kakamega forest in Western Kenya. He grows Ocimum kilimandscharicum, a medicinal plant that is processed by Muliru farmers group to make an Naturab ointment. By so doing, farmers have an alternative source of income and reduce pressure on the forest.

Disease Resistant Cassava in Western Kenya

The African Cassava Mosaic Disease and Brown Streak Virus devastated Cassava field in western Kenya in the 90s and early 2000 reducing harvests by up to 100 percent. Farmers abandoned the crop, compromising food security in the region. Researchers have in the recent past developed and disseminated disease resistant Cassava varieties.
In this radio program, we visit a community based organization that is involved in bulking and distributing clean cassava cutting among its members.
